Today—scarcely a handful of people are familiar with the deeds of Jedediah Peck, alias Plough-Jogger. It’s despairing to think there could be so little remembrance of a time, when a once quite popular Jedediah Peck, traveled the countryside sharing with whomever would listen to his radical ideologies for an unfettered democracy. No one remembers old Judge Peck with his ‘twangy’ Yankee accent and those saddlebags that were always stuffed with political literature. Long forgotten—are the political wars in Otsego County that came to a climax one sultry night in September 1799, when Peck was arrested and dragged from his home in irons cuffed to his wrists and ankles. The news of his arrest sparked riotous protests throughout the land… “A hundred missionaries in the cause of democracy, stationed between New York and Cooperstown, could not have done so much for the republican cause as the journey of Judge Peck, as a prisoner, for Otsego to the capital of the state.”
As in all life, the Jedediah Peck's story begins at birth—When, in the winter of 1748, an aged mid-wife, Widow Sill, foresaw greatness when she gazed into the infant’s eyes, compelling the cantankerous spinster to retell the story of the Captain’s Prophecy. By the age of eight, this young lad had earned his Indian name, Plough-Jogger, from a wise Niantic Chief, Painted Cloud. The boy grew up learning both Christian values and the ways of the Niantic Indians. Along the way, there came many twists and turns, that led this young man down the preverbal path of the unknown. Then, came the golden opportunity to ship aboard John Hancock’s sloop, The Liberty. This opportunity led him to Boston, where he befriends two cobblers, a wealthy importer, and a gifted public speaker. However, the legacy of Plough-Jogger soon became a threat to the British authorities, which made him a suspect and wanted for questioning.
And then, early in March of 1766, an incident on Hancock’s Wharf nearly erupts into revolution. Out of all the chaos and discord, emerges the Legend of Plough-Jogger.

5 stars Mr McCues first novel "The Legend of Plough-Jogger" is a masterful combination of our nations birthing and the impact of a relatively unknown Jedadiah Peck on those events. Mr McCue weaves this historical with such a flair it is indeed astounding that this is his first novel. His attention to detail and fact is a testament to his love of truth. Rest assured, this is by no means a dull and dry historical account! This novel is an action packed tale which leads the reader through the fields, woods and settlements of that time in such a fashion that one feels more of an observer than a detached reader. I especially love his descriptions of the flora and fauna of the region, as well as the respect he shows of the indigenous peoples culture and ceremonies. This is a novel not easy to put down as the action is fast and furious! I most eagerly await the next novel to see what becomes of young Mr Peck! Enjoy it, is my recommendation.Product details

This marvelous historical novel grabbed me from page one. It is the inspirational journey of a colorful character , Jerediah Peck ...... His walk through history and how the events and people he encounters along the way help shape his life. James McCue"s eloquent use of the English language endeared me to his characters and made me feel I was right there in the story. I didn't want to put it down.
